Homeowners Insurance in NC Is Quite The Item In Raleigh
Homeowners Insurance in North Carolina is a big item in Raleigh this year. There are several bills being introduced that deal with homeowners insurance. The bills are there to try and help homeowners especially along the coast in flood zones. The problem is that if the legislation is too harsh on rates the insurance companies can choose to not write policies in those areas. Fewer companies is less competition which is higher prices.
The state regulates insurance rates now but insurance companies can get by this by having a homeowner sign a waiver agreeing to the higher cost. The insurance company just sends a letter and hopes the homeowner signs it and sends it back. If he doesn't then the insurance company cancels his insurance and he has to find a new policy. It looks like at least 40% of the policies written in the last year were higher then the state allows because of the waiver. To me it looks like the rate is too low or the system is not working very well. Hopefully the legislature in Raleigh will pass a common sense bill for homeowners insurance.

Haiku coming to Chapel Hill
Haiku devotees will have a good time in Chapel Hill on April 26th. April is national poetry month and the NC Haiku Society is having its annual conference in Chapel Hill this Saturday.
There will be a series of haiku and senryu workshops as well as a walk through nature. Lenard D. Moore will speaking and is a NC literature Award Winner. He says writing haiku is a great habit to have because it teaches awareness.

Wake County Governing Board Changes Voting Districts
The North Carolina state legislature changed the way the Wake County Governing Board is elected. On the surface it seems like a good idea but drill down and it turns into a partisan issue. The county has 12 municipalities but nine do not have representation on the board. That is because of the at large voting districts. Raleigh and Cary account for about 60% of the population in the county and are overwhelmingly Democrat.
The board is not "geographic diverse" so to speak as as seven of the members live in the same general area.
The idea is get representation from all the municipalities which is good except the general assembly is using its new voting districts which is now being fought in the courts as being too "gerrymandered" but that's another issue. When you have all the power wielded by one area or by one party things tend to go wrong. In this case the smaller districts get lost in the shuffle. The board better get used to the idea because nothing can be changed until at least 2020.
